Tips for sending and receiving crypto
Cryptocurrency transactions are irreversible. Once a transaction has been registered on the blockchain and a certain amount of time (minutes, hours) has passed, this is, for all practical purposes, absolutely irreversible. This is good for the recipient but bad for the sender and therefore must be taken into account when sending since there is no mechanism for claims or returns if the recipient of the funds does not comply with what we expect in return.
It is a good idea to verify the addresses when contacting the other party who is going to send or receive. This is because there are computer viruses that replace cryptocurrency addresses, for example when cutting and pasting from the clipboard. Therefore, if you copy and paste without looking, it could happen that you are pasting another direction without realizing it. Or if the address is transmitted by email or displayed on the screen there is a small possibility that a sophisticated attacker may have replaced it. This risk is greatly reduced if you verify it in another way, for example by checking that the one shown on the screen is the same as the one received by email.
Mention the cryptocurrency code (BTC, ETH, LTC…). There are hundreds of cryptocurrencies, many of them derived from Bitcoin and work in a similar way. This means that sometimes a given address is valid for several different cryptocurrencies. However, each cryptocurrency records transactions on its own blockchain. If a transfer is made to the wrong blockchain, the funds could be lost. To make it more complicated, some cryptocurrencies have similar names and even, unfortunately, they incite confusion. Therefore, it is important not only to mention the name of the cryptocurrency but also its code. For example, to use Bitcoin, always mention your BTC code. If it were Bitcoin Cash, mention its BCH code.
Quantity matters. Logically, the higher the amount to send or receive, the more important it is to take precautions. In case of transferring a significant amount it is even advisable to make a test shipment for a small amount.
